Greetings Brothers of the Eastern Region,
Allow me to take a moment to extend sincere wishes for a prosperous New Year to you and yours on behalf of the Eastern Regional Board.
Brothers, I cannot express how much of an honor it is to serve as your Eastern Regional Director at this moment in time. Today we celebrate 100 Years of “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity”. As Sigma men prepare to gather at locations across the globe in celebration of this monumental occasion, let us never forget those who paved the way. We have a rich history of men who have pledged their lives to serve communities across the globe.
For a century the men of Sigma have maintained a positive impact on campuses, in the community, across the nation and globally as we strive to keep the vision of our Founders alive and ever-growing. A vision which originated in Memphis and became the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity on the campus of Howard University has transformed into an international organization. Since January 9, 1914; Phi Beta Sigma has attracted men of like mind with a desire to serve humanity. As we celebrate this day, we celebrate all things Sigma. We honor our beloved Founders and all men that have taken the oath to exemplify the high ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.
As we gather this week around the globe, emotions and spirits will be running high. While we take time to enjoy the moment, it is important for us to look back in order to guide us as we move forward. I encourage all brothers to maintain the positive spirit from this occasion beyond this week and carry it forward throughout the year, and into the next century of Sigma. Our communities need us now more than ever. Let us live up to the oath we took to become members and honor our rich history by working to better serve them. We must never fall into a sense of complacency and live off of the accolades of the past, but build upon our rich history and set the tone for those who will follow.
We would be remiss if we did not take a moment to acknowledge and honor our sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Your continued support of our organization does not go unnoticed. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you and would not have it any other way.
Brothers, we thank you for your continued support of Phi Beta Sigma and this Board. We will continue to do what is necessary to better serve you and move this Region forward.
In closing, I leave you with a few words which will take us back to the beginning of our journey through Sigma . . .
“O Sigma Dear, Thou hast for years
Led brave men strong and free,
To thee we raise our hearts in song
We pledge our loyalty.”
Happy Founders Day Brothers
January 9, 1914 – January 9, 2014
