On Saturday, March 7th, Brothers in attendance at the Eastern Region’s Leadership Conference were afforded the opportunity to hear and assess the oratorical skills of three (3) dynamic young Brothers during the oratorical competition. Attendees included state directors, regional officers and international officers. The judges for the competition were Bro. Ken Daniel (President of Life Members; President of Pi Zeta Sigma), Bro. Sam Caldwell (Mu Iota Sigma), and Bro. J.R. Reeves (Regional Director of Social Action; Zeta Chi Sigma). Each Brother spoke on the topic selected for the 2015 Conclave cycle: "Literacy is widely considered the single-most important part of education. As a society, as communities, we cannot grow without being competent in literacy. What is the importance of literacy in Education?"
The oratory presentations demonstrated that each Brother had prepared for the competition by researching the topic, organizing and practicing their deliveries and staying within the timelines specified. After the tallying of scores, the judges announced that Bro. Edward Alexander (Zeta Eta Chapter), would represent the Eastern Region at the 2015 Conclave Oratorical Competition. Constructive feedback was given to all three brothers from the judges and all Brothers present.
Competitors in the debate competition were to address the 2015 Conclave cycle topic: "The United States should guarantee universal health care for its citizens." (Participants should be prepared to argue in the affirmative and negative.) The two teams that had registered for the debate competition were from Gamma Chapter and Theta Psi Chapter. In the absence of the team from Theta Psi Chapter, the team from Gamma Chapter (Bro. Andrae’ Francois and Bro. Sterlin Moye) was selected to represent the Eastern Region at the 2015 Conclave Debate Competition. The team was given an opportunity to present their viewpoints in the affirmative and negative. Constructive feedback was also provided to the Brothers, along with contacts that work in the healthcare arena in order that they might strengthen perceived gaps in their arguments.
Congratulations to all Brothers that stepped up to the challenge and participated in the competitions. We look forward to your continued development as orators and debaters. We enthusiastically salute and support the Brothers that will represent the Mighty Eastern Region at the 2015 Conclave’s Oratorical & Debate Competitions. March on ye might host!
In keeping with our educational theme “Men of Sigma Promoting Literacy” and our 3.00 GPA initiative, three Brothers were pleasantly surprised at the end of the Saturday session to learn that they were being awarded scholarships. The three recipients will be Bro. Edward Alexander (Zeta Eta Chapter, University of Virginia), Bro. Michael Evans (Delta Zeta Chapter, Norfolk State University) and Bro. Trey Lasane (Alpha Chapter, Howard University). Congratulations to all Brothers that continue to improve their academic standing. You are doing an outstanding job of boldly declaring to the world that we are definitely talented and educated Men of Sigma.
